Ohmium
Ohmium designs, manufactures and deploys modular PEM electrolyzers that make green hydrogen cost-competitive for industries like steel and refining. Its Lotus electrolyzer is a containerized system combining the stack, water treatment, power conversion, thermal management and controls, and in November 2025 the company reported 18 GW of capacity per ton of iridium, nearly double the industry's 2030 target. Ohmium is headquartered in Newark, California, has raised a $250 million Series C led by TPG, and holds a portfolio of around 230 published patents.
Bennett David is Senior IP Counsel at Ohmium and its only in-house IP attorney. He holds a JD/MBA from Suffolk University Law School and an undergraduate degree from North Carolina A&T State University, and practised patent prosecution at IP firms before moving in-house. At Ohmium he builds the invention pipeline, develops disclosures, manages outside counsel and takes on whatever else legal needs from leadership.
Challenge
Ohmium is redefining the frontier for PEM electrolyzers against a well-funded competitor set, and the portfolio is the moat. That compresses the filing window on every invention. Expanding the portfolio falls to one person: Bennett runs the invention pipeline, develops the disclosures, manages outside counsel and handles the rest of leadership's legal asks.
Working with conventional outside counsel meant every new attorney had to learn Ohmium's technology, terminology and claim conventions from scratch, and every filing carried the law firm's hourly model with it. Neither fit a team of one that needed to file quickly and often.
Tradespace Value
Through Tradespace Counsel, Ohmium works with a senior IP attorney who specializes in electrochemical systems. Before drafting began, Tradespace's AI analyzed Ohmium's prior filings and built a style guide covering its terminology, claim conventions and figure style, which cut the attorney's learning curve from months to hours. For each new invention the AI flags similar Ohmium patents, searches prior art and generates a full application, so the attorney's time goes to claims strategy with Bennett: breadth, and alignment with where the business is going.
Bennett and his team see the attorney's progress on each case in real time in the Tradespace platform. The result is a predictable pipeline: from disclosure to a filed provisional in under two weeks, at roughly half the cost per filing, with about three hours of in-house time on each.
- Disclosure to filed provisional in 10 days
- 50% lower cost per filing
- Around three hours of in-house time per filing
The next step is upstream. Ohmium's engineers are building gigawatts of electrolyzers, and disclosure forms compete with that work. Tradespace is rolling out its invention harvesting agents across the engineering team: engineers submit whatever they have on hand, a slide deck, a schematic or a GitHub PR, and the agents build a structured disclosure and an initial assessment for Ohmium's patent review board. Approved disclosures flow straight into a Counsel filing.
